Speak in a new tongue

Hands up if your child is weak at speaking a foreign language. It is an inside joke that British kids are not good language learners. Foreign languages are not a popular option at school. Many children start studying a new language at the age of 11 and many give up by 14. Do you believe in children learning a foreign language?

Statistics don’t lie

  • Only 38% of Britons speak a foreign language, 18% speak two and only 6% of the population speak three or more.
  • Compare this to Europe, where 56% of them speak at a foreign language, 28% speak at least two and 11% speak three or more.
  • English is a widely spoken foreign language, with 51% of EU citizens can have a conversation in English.

It is worth the effort

Experts consider that learning another language helps develop strong cognitive skills, such as mental flexibility, listening skills and problem-solving. The advantages are:

  1. Boost the brain, as learning a new language means intricate rules, structures, and new speech.
  2. Improves the memory, as a new language requires the ability to recall and apply the new words and rules, providing a brain work-out.
  3. Better at multi-tasking, as people who have developed the ability to think in different languages can move from one task to another task more easily.
  4. The mother language is improved, as a new language makes speakers more conscious of the grammar and vocabulary of their own language.
  5. Better job choices, as many multilingual employees add value to the workforce and were actively recruited.

Being multilingual means seeing the world from different viewpoints, enhancing the ability to communicate in a connected world. A popular myth is that British people state that there is no need to learn another language because everyone speaks English. Learning a language can be done at any age. What is your next language?
